How does this music video explore the conventions of Andrew Goodwin's theory of music videos?

  1. You've applied Goodwin's theory well here, Isaac. However, in places it is rather more at the level of 'identifying' rather than 'analysing. For instance, consider the use of close ups of the artists and use of performance shots (part 1 of your ppt). Why do rock music videos do this? Consider how music videos are primarily an advert: they are encouraging the audience to buy the product. Performance videos promote both the live gigs that a band does (whichm in the age of the mp3, is where a band makes most money). The live performance aspect also is intended to appeal to the target audience's interest in live music: it is part of the lifestyle culture of that subculture.

Consider the 'political' aspect of the lyrics in American Idiot and Pretender. The music links with the lyrics because the lyrics are a key part of the way the band is selling to/ connecting with the audience. The audience want the political message, and as the lyrics are where this resides, the lyrics are made central to the video.

Why does American Idiot use the cameras? Is this part of their critique of (mediated) American culture?

Excellent use of stills to illustrate your points. Good use of the word monophonic. First time I've seen a student use that. Go you.

I'd advise you to revisit and wherever you have identified something, consider WHY it is being used. Aim to analyse rather than identify.
